Day 27 Ben’s Camp Hinds Blog 2018

Hello everyone, today we had a severe thunderstorm come through camp. We were in our emergency shelters during the entire storm and everyone was safe and accounted for.  After we were given the all-clear a few staff members found that one of the staff cabins (Boone Manor) had been completely destroyed by a tree that was hit by lightning. The only thing that matters to us is that everyone is okay.

Last night at approximately 6pm storms came through Camp Hinds and Boone Manor was destroyed! Thankfully Emergency Procedures were in place and our 4 staff cabin residents, and all campers, were in shelters. Generations of staff have stayed here and we hope to rebuild it soon. Please consider donating to rebuild Boone Manor and replace the staff members' belongings.

The tree was struck by lightning Tuesday evening and destroyed the counselors' cabin at Camp Hinds. A powerful thunderstorm tore through a Boy Scout camp Tuesday evening, destroying a cabin used to house camp counselors.

Lightning struck a tree, which fell on a staff cabin known as Boone Manor, Camp Hinds said on its Facebook page. The wood-framed structure was crushed, but the counselors were not inside at the time. “We were in our emergency shelters during the entire storm and everyone was safe and accounted for,” the post said. “The only thing that matters to us is that everyone is OK. That is all.”

Camp Hinds supporters have started a campaign to raise $11,000 to rebuild Boone Manor. The GoFundMe campaign, as of Wednesday night, had raised close to $1,000.  The Pine Tree Council, Boy Scouts of America, owns and operates Camp Hinds, which is located on more than 300 acres of land on Panther Pond. The camp was founded in1927.

RAYMOND, Maine — WMTW

Storms moving through southern Maine on Tuesday afternoon destroyed a cabin housing four counselors at a summer camp. A tree fell on the staff cabin at Camp William Hinds in Raymond, destroying it. Staff at the camp tell WMTW News 8 that campers and staff were in their emergency shelters when the thunderstorms moved through and no one was hurt.

They believe the building is too unstable to even retrieve personal belonging.  “The only thing that matters to us is that everyone is OK. That is all,” staff wrote on Facebook.  Staff was assessing the rest of the property Wednesday morning to determine if any other buildings were destroyed.

Turns out that it was a micro-burst that hit the tree.  Camp forester estinated that the 100ft tall pine tree wighted about 20,000 pounds and hit with a force of about 1 million pounds.
